Fringe..The beginning of this fashion statement and symbol started out as a practical rather genius method of a rainwater repellent. A fashion gutter in other words. Designed by the Native Americans.
Later the re-emergence of this practical fashion came in the 1920s. Daring to show more than ankle hem lines shortened and fringe became a method in which made this morally possible. Then we jump to the notable and very impactful 1970s. Fringe became oh so much more than just fashion. Civil rights was a huge issue so was the morality of the world.
Enter Free Love, Enter The Dragon ( Bruce Lee reference had to do it ), and enter the rejection of mainstream thinking.
Fringe was a statement of sympathy and compassion of oppressed minority groups. Why do I love fringe so much? For starters I am actually native american myself along with most of my family which I am certain is part Cherokee Indian. I have always had a deep respect and admiration for this culture. Two I love what it symbolizes: Something having more of a meaning than the fact it just looks good. To some anyways, as it is probable that not all share my love for fringe, lol. Hopefully a bit of interesting history, and a piece of myself as a designer and artist come through..
